It’s about supporting people and building relationships. Many of our tutors stay with us for years, because they find so much satisfaction in this work - and end up making lifelong friends.

There are many ways to volunteer with Racine Literacy Council.
You can volunteer to:
Teach English to an adult English Language Learner
Tutor adults in basic education, helping people improve their reading, writing or math abilities
Work with children and families in our Family Literacy Program
Tutor at-risk youth in the Jonathan Delagrave Youth Development and Care Center
Apply to serve on our Board of Directors
Apply to become an intern in our Family Literacy Program
Volunteer in other ways, especially if you have a special skill set
All volunteer tutors working independently must be 18 years or older. We welcome youth volunteers to work with us in a supervised capacity, such as in our Family Literacy Program. We will sign off on volunteer service hours or can provide a letter of proof.
We ask for a minimum of 2 hours per week for an 8 week session. Prior experience teaching or working in adult education or ESL tutoring is not necessary and you do not need to know another language. Training is provided and required for all new tutors.
